I read eight books in the month of June! Not too shabby, but I definitely feel like I slacked a bit toward the end of the month. Because, really, out of those eight I only truly enjoyed two. I lost a bit of my verve toward the end of June because of that—But I hope that July is a fresh, new month full of inspiring reads!
Anyway, even though my Favorites List is small for June, I still want to share the two books with you that left me thinking!
1.
First, I was struck by My Dark Vanessa and its brutal, honest look into a sexual abuse survivor’s perspective. It is most definitely a heavy book and very difficult to read at times, but I genuinely gleaned a lot of understanding from Vanessa’s perspective. It shone a new light on just how damaging and manipulative a relationship between a child and their abuser truly is.
Again, My Dark Vanessa is a heart wrenching, difficult read. I commend the author taking on such a dark issue—but I only recommend this book for those who want to delve into the troubling yet important voice of a young girl who has endured far too much.
2.
My second most-enjoyed book of June was Gone Girl. This was an intriguing read! I found myself analyzing every bit of information the story provided, and I liked that I could sometimes relate with either of the main characters.
Gone Girl is told through alternating perspective: Nick, whose wife has gone missing, and his wife Amy’s diary entries leading up to her disappearance. While the story at times was a but predictable, I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s writing and ended up highlighting several sentences that were beautifully written or relatable.
I recommend Gone Girl to anyone wanting a roller coaster ride of a story!
Have you read any great thought-provoking books lately? I would love to hear your suggestions on anything you think I’d like!
Until the next book,
Hogan
